You climb well indoors. You understand boards, angles, controlled movement.

Then you get outside – and suddenly everything feels different. The holds are irregular. The feet are worse. The rock doesn’t care about your plan.

That disconnect is normal. This is a chance to close it.

Every month we head outdoors for an informal day at a crag – a group of gym climbers taking what we’ve built indoors and putting it on real rock together.

How We Do This

Outdoor climbing carries real risk. You’re responsible for climbing within your ability, looking after yourself, and making your own safety calls. This is an informal group outing — not a guided session.

We ask everyone to leave the crag as they found it: no chalk on faces, take your rubbish out, respect any access rules for the area. Everyone is welcome regardless of level or background. The only expectation is that you bring a good attitude and extend the same respect to others that you’d want yourself.

Why This Matters

On real rock, inefficient movement gets exposed quickly. But so does good movement.

You’ll see:

For many climbers, this is the missing link between gym progress and outdoor confidence.

Most climbers stay indoors because outdoor climbing feels intimidating. The gap between gym and crag stays wide. Getting outside with a group is the easiest way to close it.

What to Expect

Informal climbing in small groups. More experienced climbers in the group will naturally be watching movement, answering questions, and offering thoughts when they’re useful.

It’s the kind of learning that happens organically when a good group shares a crag. Enough input to be useful. Not so much that it gets in the way.

No drills. No theory. Just climbing outside with good people.

Who It’s For

You don’t need prior outdoor experience. You just need curiosity and a willingness to climb, observe, and learn.

FAQ

We’ll cancel or reschedule. Wet rock is slippery and dangerous to climb on — but it’s also fragile. Sandstone and other rock types can break, chip, or lose holds when climbed wet. Staying off wet rock is as much about looking after the crag as it is about safety. Any changes will be communicated through the WhatsApp group — another reason to join it early.
No. This is a community outing organised informally by members of the Sandbox community. Sandbox Bouldering provides informational support and discounted crash pad hire, but this is not a coached or guided session run by the gym.
The specific location is shared via the WhatsApp group closer to the date. Crags can change depending on conditions, access, and group size — so the group is the best place to stay informed.
No minimum grade. Outdoor climbing is different enough from indoor that grade comparisons don’t mean much anyway. If you can move on a wall and you’re comfortable with uneven terrain, you’ll get something out of it.
Climbing shoes and a crashpad. If you don’t have a pad, book the $5 hire with Sandbox. Comfortable clothes, sun protection, water, and food for the day. A positive attitude helps too.
The outing itself is free. You just need to get yourself to the crag. The only optional cost is crash pad hire ($5) if you need one.
Yes. The more the merrier, as long as numbers stay manageable. Just let us know in the WhatsApp group so we can account for headcount — and make sure they read this page so they know what to expect.
